About this campaign

Grounded is taking part in Operation Food Freedom, a campaign to make healthy regional vegetables and fruit accessible and affordable for everyone — plenty of food for little money, straight from the land. Participants receive a weekly box of over 13 kg of fresh produce, including potatoes, onions, pumpkins, beets, turnips, courgettes, Brussels sprouts, apples, pears, white beans, and eggs. The wider campaign rallies a swarm of new and existing Food Heroes to tackle food scarcity together, with events and workshops at the pickup location. Supporters can also donate to strengthen the Food Hero network behind the mission.

Thirteen kilos that actually get eaten

I was sceptical a weekly box this big would just rot in the bottom of the fridge, but it has completely changed how we cook. The mix is genuinely seasonal — a glut of pumpkin and beets in autumn, then the first sprouts and apples — and Mark's team plan it so nothing repeats too often. Picking up at the campus on the way home is easy, and there is usually a short workshop or a pot of soup going. For the price it makes the supermarket feel like a rip-off.

Cheaper than the supermarket, and better

Operation Food Freedom does exactly what the name suggests — a serious amount of fresh produce for very little money, all grown nearby. The potatoes and onions keep for weeks and the leafy stuff is picked the same week. What surprised me was the community side: the pickup point turns into a little weekly catch-up. I came for affordable vegetables and ended up knowing my neighbours.
